Improvement in animal genetic potential challenges the digestive system, which usually leads to a reduction in nutrient digestion and absorption. Sub-optimal feed efficiency will have a negative impact on the farm’s economic entity. Sodium butyrate is an important particle of feed modulation that stimulates healthy intestinal microflora.
Sodium butyrate is a preferred energy source for enterocytes which supports their development and maintenance. Through stimulating the growth of villi, increasing the intestinal surface area followed by the increased absorption, it can improve animal growth. Butyrate can also diffuse from the bacterial cell wall into the cytoplasm and inhibit the bacterial growth in enterobacteriaceae (like Salmonella, E. coli, etc...). Sodium butyrate attaches to specialized receptors in the hindgut and stimulates these enterocytes to release defensins, so it motivates the ability of the animal to overcome bacterial infections. Moreover, it empowers the immune system by activating primary monocytes-macrophages in bone marrow, spleen, jejunum, and cecum. Besides, it slows down the evacuation of the stomach/gizzard to optimize feed passage and increases electrolytes and water absorption, providing drier litter. Coating short/medium-chain fatty acids will prevent their unpleasant odor from spreading, in addition to releasing sodium butyrate all over the gastrointestinal tract.
The benefits of using these organic acids in feed depends on their ability to reach the hindgut. To protect the short/medium-chain fatty acids, coating-technology due to the ‘Gradual Release’ is a safe solution.
