The availability of some nutrients is a known challenge in ruminant nutrition.

Many nutrients are already degraded before reaching the small intestine. To meet the cow's nutrients requirements and to maximize its production potential, some nutrients deficiencies should be corrected. High-yielding dairy cows have a high demand for energy and protein. The first limiting amino acids for high-productive dairy cattle are methionine and lysine.

Dairy cows are fed protein-rich feeds in order to meet their metabolizable protein requirement. The amino acid profile of feeds is a determining factor in the metabolizable amino acid supply and should be as close as possible to the ideal AA-profile of milk. Protein-rich feedstuffs such as soybean meal have relatively low methionine content in comparison to lysine. There is a need for protected methionine as a source of metabolizable methionine.
Free methionine will be degraded in the rumen, coating methionine with fat is one way to protect methionine from rumen degradation and comes available for absorption in the small intestine.
